Writer's Block: It Sounds Better When You Say It

Jun. 7th, 2009 | 10:45 am

No matter what language you speak, you've probably come across words or phrases in another language that sound better than their equivalents in your native tongue. What's your favorite word or phrase in a foreign language?

View 507 Answers

Now this is a good question. Besides English (which is my native language) I also hope to become fluent in Esperanto. So far my favourite word that I've learned is the word "Espero" (hope) simply because it sounds interesting. I also like many of the words found in Quenya and Sindarin, which along with LAadan, has inspired me to create my own conlang. From my own language I have the following words:

Alisanire = a close friend [Alis (heart) + anire (friend)
Anirishe = a former friend who is now an enemy [Anire (friend) + ish (disliked)]
Asimanire = an old friend [Asim (past) + anire (friend)]
Lesanire = a on/off friend [Less (sometimes) + anire (friend)]
Shenanire = a person who follows another individual or group of individuals under the false belief that they are a friend [Shen (no) + anire (friend]

I think that they sound a lot nicer than the English translation "friend." Note: all words are masculine and in the nominative case.

Being given too many assignments at once, assignments with confusing questions, and assignments with repetitive questions just rephrased differently. So lets's just say assignments in general.

Out of all of your favorite books, pick just one you'd recommend everyone read. As a bonus: why did you pick that one?

View 505 Answers

Besides Harry Potter? Well that's a tough question because I like to read a lot. However, besides Harry Potter, I really enjoyed reading Deltora's Quest by Emily Rodda. The series is about a young boy who has to collect several magical gems which will allow him to defeat an evil tyrant who has taken over the land of Deltora.

I would reccomend this book to everyone because both adults and young children can enjoy it equally. In particular, I enjoyed this series because of the clever riddles that the main characters have to solve throughout the series. I would also reccomend it simply because it is entirely original, and not simply a LotR rip-off.

Rowen of Rin is equally as good.

Men have it easier. Did you know that woman throughout the world form the biggest group that experiance prejudice? Just think about it for a minute. Who get's the top jobs? Men. Who get's paid more for their jobs? Men. Therefore the answer to this question is simple logic.

What's the best vacation you've ever taken?

View 500 Answers

The best vacation that I've ever taken was in Year 11 when I went on Rock to Reef with other students from my school. I spent the first week in Central Australia where we got to visit Ayres Rock etc and stay in underground buildings, and then in the second week we went to Queensland where I got to visit beautiful islands and examine the reefs.

What was your favorite subject in elementary or primary school? Does it have anything to do with your life now?

Art was always my favourite subject at both primary and secondary school. At the moment I'm currently studying to be a librarian technician but in the future I would also like to use my artistic ability to illustrate books etc as a way to earn additional cash.
